I've had a very full and interesting life, and I'm just getting to the best part of it. Through all the changes that have happened along the way, food has always been a big part of my life. I spent my summers as a kid on my uncle's farm in the midwest, my dad always had a garden, and my mom was a great midwestern cook. My sister and I both learned how to cook from a Betty Crocker kid's cookbook, and more on the job training cooking for other campers in the scouts.
I discovered Mexican, Asian and American cooking without having to leave the area where I grew up. My first job at 13 was helping out in a cafeteria, then a pizza maker and fry cook in high school. And then after years in non-food careers, in the last few years working as a personal chef, and in the kitchen of a local version of a Whole Foods type store.
So it comes as no surprise that now that I have finally figured out what to do while here on the planet, it involves food. In fact it is food. Cooking it, growing it, definitely eating it, and using food to bring people together. Much as I've always done. But now I'm seeing that it all starts with growing food.
It's been about 6 months since I went to Earth Activist Training where I earned a Permaculture Design Certification. Besides that the experience totally changed my life. It changed my perspective by giving me tools to make healthy change, but it also showed me something I'd been searching for. The connection I'd been looking for and was just starting to find. The connection to earth, to people, and to community.
It also rekindled my love of growing gardens. And now I'm experiencing gardening and gardens, and people and the food they eat in a different way. I want to help people to eat better and help their local food systems just by growing some of their own food.
I envision a world where through cooperation there is much abundance all around us. By helping each other in conscious ways there will be enough for everyone. We'll also learn that we are connected and interdependent with each other.
So I want to help people grow food. I want to find people that would like to start a garden but don't know how to get started. I'd like to inspire them to grow some of their own food. I'll donate my time to the project if that's what it takes to get another garden planted. And I'd like to inspire other people to do the same thing.
Peace and Peas,
Calliope
